▶ Open related demonstrationHow to practice level change
Start with a cooperative partner on a wrestling mat. Have a coach check the starting position and contact before adding resistance. These notes describe one introductory approach; the linked demonstration may show a variation.
Partner role
The partner remains in a normal stance and provides a visual target without reaching for the athlete’s head. Watch whether the hips lower before the entry step begins.
- 1
Start close enough that you do not need to lunge. Hold your normal stance and identify the height of the leg you want to attack.
- 2
Bend your knees and lower your hips. Let your torso incline naturally without dropping your face toward the floor or folding sharply at the waist.
- 3
Pause at the lower level. Your feet should still support you, and your hands should be able to defend without touching the mat.
- 4
Return to stance, then repeat with a short entry step. Keep the lowering action connected to the step rather than making two unrelated motions.
Common mistakes and corrections
Reaching down instead of lowering the hips leaves your head ahead of your base. Rehearse with the hands close to the chest.
Dropping so low that you cannot move turns the level change into a squat. Use only the depth needed for the entry.
Take it to the mat
A focused practice drill
Complete two sets of six slow changes, then two sets of six level-change-and-step repetitions on each lead leg. Reset fully between repetitions.
Before adding resistance
Can you lower and step forward without first raising your hips again?
