▶ Open demonstrationHow to practice penetration step
Start with a cooperative partner on a wrestling mat. Have a coach check the starting position and contact before adding resistance. These notes describe one introductory approach; the linked demonstration may show a variation.
Partner role
A partner can mark the intended distance with their stance while remaining still. Let the attacker complete the entry without sprawling, then check that the trailing foot has recovered.
- 1
Set a target just beyond your lead foot. Begin with a level change so your hips are ready to travel forward, and keep your hands in front.
- 2
Step the lead foot toward the target. For a knee-touch entry, let the knee touch a padded mat softly as your hips continue forward; do not crash straight down.
- 3
Bring your trailing leg forward and around to rebuild your base. Keep your chest connected to the imaginary opponent instead of leaving your hips behind.
- 4
Recover to stance and repeat on the other side. Only add a cooperative partner once the entry is smooth and your coach has checked the distance.
Common mistakes and corrections
A long first step can leave the trail leg stranded. Shorten the entry until you can recover the second foot.
Stopping on both knees gives the defender time to apply pressure. Make the trail-leg recovery part of every repetition.
Take it to the mat
A focused practice drill
Place two flat markers one comfortable entry apart. Perform three sets of five entries per side, emphasizing a quiet knee touch and immediate recovery.
Before adding resistance
Can you finish each entry with a base strong enough to change direction?
