How to practice stance discipline

Start with a cooperative partner on a wrestling mat. Have a coach check the starting position and contact before adding resistance. These notes describe one introductory approach; the linked demonstration may show a variation.

Partner role

The partner mirrors without touching or feinting a shot. Call a clear freeze and give the athlete time to check their feet before offering one observation about balance.

  1. 1

Set your feet a little wider than your hips, with one foot slightly ahead. Bend at the knees and hips so your weight stays between your feet rather than falling onto your toes.

  2. 2

Keep your chest comfortably lifted, your neck aligned, and your elbows near your ribs. Hold your hands in front where they can make contact without reaching past your base.

  3. 3

Take one small step forward, backward, and to each side. Recover your original foot spacing after every step and check that you could stop without stumbling.

  4. 4

Ask a partner to mirror your movement without contact. Maintain the same height and spacing as the direction changes; switch lead legs only when you can do so under control.

Common mistakes and corrections

Standing taller after a few steps makes the legs easier to reach. Pause, rebuild the knee bend, and resume at a slower pace.

A very wide stance can feel stable but makes the first step slow. Narrow it until each foot can move without a big weight shift.

Take it to the mat

A focused practice drill

Work for three 20-second rounds of stance and motion with 20 seconds to reset. A partner calls freeze twice per round; hold your position without taking an extra balance step.

Before adding resistance

Can you stop in every direction with your hands ready and your weight centered?
