▶ Open demonstrationHow to practice stuff head
Start with a cooperative partner on a wrestling mat. Have a coach check the starting position and contact before adding resistance. These notes describe one introductory approach; the linked demonstration may show a variation.
Partner role
The attacker enters slowly and allows the target leg to withdraw. Keep the neck relaxed and aligned; stop the repetition if the defending hand applies uncomfortable pressure rather than guiding the position.
- 1
Recognize the entry early and keep your feet available to move. Place a controlled hand on the head or shoulder line as directed by your coach, avoiding the face and throat.
- 2
Move your attacked leg back while guiding the head down and away from the leg. The defensive action comes from the hand and hips together, not from forcing the neck.
- 3
Square your hips toward the attacker and keep your chest from folding over them. Maintain enough space that the captured leg can come free.
- 4
Once the attack is stopped, move into a front control or go-behind. If the partner maintains a deep grip, rebuild your base before adding another action.
Common mistakes and corrections
Pushing down while leaving the leg in place does not remove the target. Coordinate the hand action with a backward step.
A sudden neck shove is unnecessary. Rehearse slowly and release pressure when the position is stopped.
Take it to the mat
A focused practice drill
Perform two sets of five slow entries per side with a cooperative partner. Pause after the defensive step to check that the leg is actually clear.
Before adding resistance
Can you clear the target leg without leaning all your weight onto the opponent’s neck?
