How to practice lines of defense

Start with a cooperative partner on a wrestling mat. Have a coach check the starting position and contact before adding resistance. These notes describe one introductory approach; the linked demonstration may show a variation.

Partner role

The attacker first gives a visible, shallow entry rather than a full-speed shot. Vary only one detail at a time so the defender can identify which layer stopped the attack.

  1. 1

Begin at a distance where you can see the attack developing. Keep your stance mobile and avoid leaving your lead leg planted within easy reach.

  2. 2

When your partner closes distance, use ready hands to meet the shoulders or arms and maintain your base. Do not extend both arms so far that your hips become exposed.

  3. 3

Keep your head and shoulders positioned to block a direct lane while your feet move. If the attacker gets underneath that line, move your hips back rather than pushing only with the arms.

  4. 4

After stopping the entry, square your hips or create a safe go-behind angle. Return to stance when control is uncertain; the first objective is to stop penetration.

Common mistakes and corrections

Waiting with the hands low removes the first defensive layer. Start each repetition with ready hands.

Sprawling at every feint uses energy and gives away position. Match the response to the depth of the attack.

Take it to the mat

A focused practice drill

A partner makes slow feints and entries for three 30-second rounds. Name the defensive layer you used after each exchange, then reset.

Before adding resistance

Can you stop a shallow attack without abandoning your stance?
