▶ Open demonstrationHow to practice sprawl & spin
Start with a cooperative partner on a wrestling mat. Have a coach check the starting position and contact before adding resistance. These notes describe one introductory approach; the linked demonstration may show a variation.
Partner role
The attacker starts with a controlled entry and supports their own upper body. Allow the defender to clear the legs before circling, then add a slow attempt to square up once that sequence is reliable.
- 1
Start with a controlled partner entry. As the attacker reaches the legs, move your legs back and bring your hips toward the shoulder line while keeping your head up.
- 2
Spread your base enough to resist being pulled forward. Direct pressure through the torso and hips rather than dropping body weight onto the neck.
- 3
Once the entry stops, secure the near arm and move your feet around the corner. Keep the attacker from following your circle by maintaining the upper-body connection.
- 4
Finish behind the hips with a balanced base. If the legs are still captured, prioritize freeing them before trying to spin.
Common mistakes and corrections
Throwing the feet back without bringing the hips into the defensive position leaves room for the attacker to follow.
Circling before stopping the shot can pull you off balance. Stop, connect, then move around.
Take it to the mat
A focused practice drill
Complete five cooperative shot-sprawl-reset repetitions, then five with a go-behind. Work both directions and increase speed without increasing impact.
Before adding resistance
Can you stop the entry and clear your legs before circling?
