▶ Open demonstrationHow to practice spiral ride
Start with a cooperative partner on a wrestling mat. Have a coach check the starting position and contact before adding resistance. These notes describe one introductory approach; the linked demonstration may show a variation.
Partner role
The bottom partner starts with a comfortable hands-and-knees base and yields gradually to the circular movement. Do not brace the shoulder rigidly; allow the rider to learn the direction before adding resistance.
- 1
Begin beside the opponent’s hips with a stable top base. Establish the arm-under-near-arm connection and inside-thigh or hip connection your coach demonstrates.
- 2
Keep the connections compact and direct pressure through the torso. Stay away from the groin and avoid pulling the shoulder into an uncomfortable range.
- 3
Walk your feet in an arc while guiding the upper body and hips in the same rotational direction. Your footwork creates the spiral; the hands maintain the connection.
- 4
Follow the breakdown into a stable ride. If the bottom wrestler rebuilds, reconnect and move again rather than stopping to squeeze harder.
Common mistakes and corrections
Pulling only with the arms leaves your hips stationary. Walk your feet around the position.
Trying to turn before breaking the base creates space underneath. Establish the breakdown first.
Take it to the mat
A focused practice drill
Perform five slow spiral breakdowns each side, starting from a cooperative base. Finish each repetition with three seconds of balanced riding control.
Before adding resistance
Can you move the base with your feet while keeping both connections comfortable?
