▶ Open demonstrationHow to practice chop breakdown
Start with a cooperative partner on a wrestling mat. Have a coach check the starting position and contact before adding resistance. These notes describe one introductory approach; the linked demonstration may show a variation.
Partner role
The bottom partner begins with a soft supporting elbow and allows weight to shift before the arm is redirected. Reset if the movement becomes a strike or the shoulder feels trapped.
- 1
Start from a legal top connection with your chest close and your hips supported. Identify the near elbow that is bearing weight.
- 2
Move the opponent’s weight enough that the near arm can be redirected. Use a controlled chop or pull at the elbow as your coach demonstrates; do not strike the joint.
- 3
Move your chest and hips with the arm action so the partner is guided toward the mat. Keep their shoulder within a natural range instead of pinning the arm behind the body.
- 4
Follow into control of the near wrist or a stable ride. Rebuild your base before attempting a turn.
Common mistakes and corrections
Hitting the elbow without moving your body adds impact without useful control. Coordinate the arm action with forward pressure.
Falling across the partner can trap the supporting arm. Guide the breakdown and keep a base of your own.
Take it to the mat
A focused practice drill
Use two sets of five cooperative breakdowns per side. Start slowly enough that the bottom wrestler can take weight off the arm before the redirect.
Before adding resistance
Can you remove the post smoothly without striking or wrenching the elbow?
