Notice the interruption
Identify what happened in plain language: I lost the tie, I missed the entry, or I was returned to the mat. Avoid turning one exchange into a label about your ability.
Use a brief reset
Take a comfortable breath, recover your posture, and bring attention back to the current position. Choose a cue short enough to remember under pressure, such as base first.
Choose the next task
Pick the next controllable job for the position. On bottom, rebuild your base; in neutral, recover stance and distance. Do not try to make up for the previous mistake with a desperate move.
Review after the round
Ask what triggered the mistake and what helped you reset. Save the longer analysis for the break so you can stay present during the exchange.
Put it into practice
Your next session
In a controlled situational round, begin from a mildly disadvantageous position and practice one reset cue. Stop after a useful response, discuss it, then repeat with the same starting position.
What to look for
Track how quickly you return to a clear task, not whether you feel perfectly calm. If an athlete is overwhelmed, pause and talk rather than adding pressure.
