WOTM field guide

Novice Development

Build a dependable action from neutral, bottom, and top. At this stage, repeatable position matters more than collecting a large number of techniques.

Novice Development: Neutral attack → Bottom escape → Top control → Apply
Key sequence · Follow the detailed explanation below.
01

Establish a neutral sequence

Connect stance and motion to a wrist tie, level change, and single-leg entry. Practice stopping in a stable captured-leg position before increasing finishing resistance.

02

Build a bottom escape

Link base positioning, hand control, and the stand-up. Make facing the opponent part of every repetition so the athlete does not stop after merely reaching the feet.

03

Connect a top breakdown

Use riding pressure to set up a chop or spiral breakdown. Follow to a balanced ride before adding a half nelson under coach supervision.

04

Test the sequence

Use short situational rounds from the exact positions practiced. Give the partner one clear defensive response and ask the athlete to maintain mechanics while adapting.

Put it into practice

Your next session

Choose one sequence per practice. Use cooperative repetitions, then light resistance, then a short situational round. Keep the same cue across all three phases.

What to look for

Progress when the athlete can demonstrate a complete action from each position and explain the next step if the first movement stalls. This is a WOTM development guide, not an external certification.
