▶ Open demonstrationHow to practice switch
Start with a cooperative partner on a wrestling mat. Have a coach check the starting position and contact before adding resistance. These notes describe one introductory approach; the linked demonstration may show a variation.
Partner role
The rider stays close without pinning the supporting arm. Allow the bottom athlete to turn slowly and locate the near leg before adding a controlled effort to follow their hips.
- 1
Build a compact base and create room for your hips to move. Keep the arm that will support you close enough that the shoulder is not stretched behind your body.
- 2
Sit your hips through to the side under control while turning your chest toward the partner. Keep your head up and stay close enough to reach the near leg.
- 3
Connect to the near leg as taught by your coach, then move your hips around the outside. The reversal comes from the changing hip angle rather than from pulling with an isolated shoulder.
- 4
Continue around until you are behind the partner and have a secure base. If the partner follows and blocks the corner, recover your base or stand instead of forcing the shoulder.
Common mistakes and corrections
Sitting too far away loses the leg connection. Keep the movement compact.
Posting a straight arm far behind you can stress the shoulder. Keep the support arm within a comfortable range and move the hips.
Take it to the mat
A focused practice drill
Work five slow switches per side from a cooperative rider. Pause at the hip turn and at the final angle before combining the actions.
Before adding resistance
Can you turn the hips without leaving the supporting shoulder trapped behind you?
