▶ Open demonstrationHow to practice inside control
Start with a cooperative partner on a wrestling mat. Have a coach check the starting position and contact before adding resistance. These notes describe one introductory approach; the linked demonstration may show a variation.
Partner role
The partner exchanges one inside tie at a time and keeps the other arm available for light contact. Maintain a steady stance and avoid turning the pummeling drill into an all-out pushing contest.
- 1
Begin with light contact in stance. Keep your elbows down and bring one forearm inside the opponent’s arm, making contact near the upper arm rather than reaching across the neck.
- 2
Step your feet into a comfortable distance and add head position. Your hand and head should work with your base, not drag it forward.
- 3
Alternate sides in a slow pummeling rhythm. Recover one inside position at a time and stay ready to defend while the other arm moves.
- 4
Use an inside tie to move the partner a step and reveal an attack. If the partner wins the inside lane back, reset or clear the tie rather than forcing the arm.
Common mistakes and corrections
Lifting both elbows high makes the legs easier to reach. Keep the elbows connected to your posture.
Pummeling with straight legs turns the drill into upper-body pushing. Keep the wrestling stance throughout.
Take it to the mat
A focused practice drill
Use three 30-second rounds of light inside-tie exchanges. In the final round, pause whenever either partner creates a clear attack lane.
Before adding resistance
Can you regain inside position without standing tall or crossing your feet?
