How to practice front headlock defense

Start with a cooperative partner on a wrestling mat. Have a coach check the starting position and contact before adding resistance. These notes describe one introductory approach; the linked demonstration may show a variation.

Partner role

The partner uses a loose, coach-checked connection that permits the defender to feel the controlling elbow. Release immediately on request and do not tighten the hold to defeat a learning repetition.

  1. 1

Start in a light, coach-checked front headlock. Keep your knees or feet under you and avoid pulling your head straight backward against a tight connection.

  2. 2

Find and control the elbow or wrist that limits your head position. Bring your own elbow toward your ribs so your arm does not remain extended as a lever.

  3. 3

Move your feet and circle toward the opening while clearing the controlling elbow. Recover your head and chest together rather than twisting the neck out on its own.

  4. 4

Face the partner in stance once your head is free. If the hold is uncomfortable or your neck is bent, stop and have the coach adjust the position.

Common mistakes and corrections

Backing away with the head still trapped can tighten the position. Clear the control before creating distance.

Leaving an arm extended gives the attacker another control point. Rebuild a compact base first.

Take it to the mat

A focused practice drill

Use five slow escapes per side from a loose hold, resetting immediately after the head clears. No live front-headlock rounds until the escape mechanics are comfortable.

Before adding resistance

Can you recover your head and stance without twisting or yanking your neck?
