▶ Open related demonstrationHow to practice crossface
Start with a cooperative partner on a wrestling mat. Have a coach check the starting position and contact before adding resistance. These notes describe one introductory approach; the linked demonstration may show a variation.
Partner role
The partner communicates immediately about uncomfortable contact. Stay cooperative and let the coach check the arm path and shoulder movement; this position should not become a contest over pain tolerance.
- 1
Have your coach demonstrate the legal contact and finish for your age group before practicing. Start beside a cooperative partner with your own base stable and the partner’s shoulder supported.
- 2
Thread the arm across the front of the head toward the far upper arm using controlled contact. Avoid the throat, eyes, nose, and any striking motion; this is not a forearm blow.
- 3
Bring your chest and feet with the connection to turn the shoulder line. Move the torso as a unit rather than trying to twist the head independently.
- 4
Release if the partner’s neck bends awkwardly or the arm cannot reach comfortably. Transition back to a ride when the connection does not produce a safe angle.
Common mistakes and corrections
Swinging the forearm into the face is not the technique. Establish contact slowly.
Pulling the head while the shoulders stay fixed can create neck stress. Move the shoulder line with your base.
Take it to the mat
A focused practice drill
Use position-only repetitions under a coach: establish the connection, move one small step, and release. Do not use live resistance until the coach approves the contact.
Before adding resistance
Can you move the upper body with controlled contact and no neck twist?
