How to practice ankle ride

Start with a cooperative partner on a wrestling mat. Have a coach check the starting position and contact before adding resistance. These notes describe one introductory approach; the linked demonstration may show a variation.

Partner role

The bottom partner moves the hips slowly and keeps the captured leg relaxed in its natural alignment. Tell the rider when the foot or knee feels trapped so the grip can be released immediately.

  1. 1

Begin from a balanced top position and locate the near ankle. Keep the waist or upper-body connection so reaching for the ankle does not disconnect your chest.

  2. 2

Use a coach-taught ankle grip without bending or twisting the foot. Keep the captured leg in its natural alignment and move your own feet closer as needed.

  3. 3

Guide the ankle while moving the opponent’s hips with your body connection. The purpose is to limit the post and follow the hips, not to torque the knee.

  4. 4

Release the ankle if the partner rotates into a trapped-leg position. Reconnect to a stable ride or move to a breakdown when the base opens.

Common mistakes and corrections

Holding the ankle far from your body can pull you behind the opponent. Follow with the feet.

Using the foot as a twisting handle stresses the joints. Control position without joint rotation.

Take it to the mat

A focused practice drill

Perform five ankle-control-and-follow repetitions on each side with a cooperative partner. End every repetition by releasing cleanly and returning to a normal ride.

Before adding resistance

Can you follow the hips while the captured leg stays comfortably aligned?
