WOTM field guide

Competition

Use a simple preparation routine so your attention has somewhere useful to go before and during a match.

Competition: Prepare → Warm up → First action → Review
Key sequence · Follow the detailed explanation below.
01

Prepare what you can

Organize gear, check the event information with your coach, and know where to warm up. Leave rule and schedule details to the current event guidance rather than assumptions.

02

Build a familiar warmup

Use movements and partner drills you already know. Gradually reach the intensity you need without exhausting yourself or trying a new technique immediately before competing.

03

Choose a first-action cue

Name the first useful action: stance and hands, move the tie, or control the wrist. Keep it short enough to use while hearing the coach and watching the opponent.

04

Debrief in two parts

First recover and settle. Then identify one behavior that worked and one situation to practice. Separate the match result from the specific decisions that produced it.

Put it into practice

Your next session

Write a three-line routine: my warmup sequence, my first-action cue, and my between-period reminder. Rehearse it during a practice match before relying on it at an event.

What to look for

The routine should be familiar and flexible. If the schedule changes, retain the essential preparation rather than trying to reproduce every minute exactly.
