Leadership on the Mat

Lead through behaviors that make teammates safer, more engaged, and better able to learn. You do not need to be the oldest or most successful wrestler to contribute.

Leadership on the Mat: Prepare yourself → Support a partner → Communicate → Include others
Key sequence · Follow the detailed explanation below.
01

Be a useful partner

Match the resistance requested by the coach. Give the other athlete a realistic position without surprising them or turning every repetition into a contest.

02

Communicate clearly

Tell a partner when a grip is uncomfortable and listen when they ask to reset. Use specific feedback such as your trail foot stayed behind instead of a vague criticism.

03

Model the routine

Be ready when instruction begins, help keep the practice space organized, and include athletes who are unsure where to go. Small consistent actions shape the room.

04

Share responsibility

Ask a newer teammate what they are working on and help them find the right drill. Bring concerns to a coach instead of trying to manage everything yourself.

Put it into practice

Your next session

Choose one partner-support action for the week: invite someone into a group, provide a useful reset, or help a teammate recall a cue. Reflect on how it changed the practice.

What to look for

Look for teammates becoming more willing to ask questions and practice honestly. Leadership should improve the group’s learning, not create a hierarchy of who gets heard.
