How to practice mat returns

Start with a cooperative partner on a wrestling mat. Have a coach check the starting position and contact before adding resistance. These notes describe one introductory approach; the linked demonstration may show a variation.

Partner role

Both athletes agree on the landing side and rehearse it with the coach first. The receiving partner follows the controlled return and avoids reaching a straight arm out to catch the fall.

  1. 1

Practice only the specific return your coach has demonstrated. Begin behind a standing partner with a legal torso connection, balanced feet, and both athletes prepared for the landing.

  2. 2

Step close enough to support the partner’s hips rather than reaching from behind. Keep your head beside the torso and your own back supported.

  3. 3

For a beginner return, use a coach-taught low hip-dump or guided return with minimal elevation. Move to the landing side and guide the partner’s hip to the mat instead of lifting high or driving them downward.

  4. 4

Follow to a stable ride and release trapped limbs. The bottom partner should not brace the landing on a straight arm, and the top partner must remain responsible for control through the landing.

Common mistakes and corrections

Lifting before securing your own base makes the landing unpredictable. Start with no-lift positional returns.

Driving a partner onto the head, neck, or a trapped arm is unacceptable. Stop the repetition when the landing position is lost.

Take it to the mat

A focused practice drill

Use a padded mat and direct coach supervision. Rehearse the step and hip placement without a return, then perform three controlled landings per side with a cooperative partner.

Before adding resistance

Can both athletes predict and control the landing before speed is added?
