▶ Open related demonstrationHow to practice hand control
Start with a cooperative partner on a wrestling mat. Have a coach check the starting position and contact before adding resistance. These notes describe one introductory approach; the linked demonstration may show a variation.
Partner role
The rider keeps a consistent waist connection while the bottom wrestler finds the wrist. Allow the first few releases, then gradually reconnect so the athlete learns to retain control while moving their feet.
- 1
Begin from a stable bottom base. Identify the hand around your waist or the wrist that is controlling your movement rather than reaching backward blindly.
- 2
Use a firm wrist grip, often supported by a second hand when your balance permits. Keep your elbows close and avoid pulling on individual fingers.
- 3
Bring the controlled hand toward a position where it cannot freely reconnect around your waist. At the same time, step a foot underneath you to begin standing.
- 4
Keep control as you turn to face the partner. Release when you have separation and a defensive stance, not while your back is still exposed.
Common mistakes and corrections
Standing first and dealing with the hands later lets the rider keep a strong connection. Make hand control part of the first movement.
Looking backward can twist your posture. Feel for the grip while keeping your head aligned.
Take it to the mat
A focused practice drill
Perform five base-to-hand-control repetitions, then five hand-control-to-stand-up repetitions per side with light resistance.
Before adding resistance
Can you keep the riding hand controlled while moving your feet underneath you?
