WOTM field guide

Intermediate Development

Connect familiar techniques through recognizable reactions. The focus shifts from performing a move to recognizing when to change direction or choose a second option.

Intermediate Development: First action → Read reaction → Choose option → Stay connected
Key sequence · Follow the detailed explanation below.
01

Read the first reaction

Begin with a reliable single-leg entry. Have the partner either leave a finishing angle or square their hips. Name the reaction before deciding what to do next.

02

Connect defense to offense

Link lines of defense to a sprawl and go-behind. Stop the entry before circling so the second action grows from control rather than a rushed guess.

03

Build a bottom choice

Practice stand-up when the hands can be cleared and a coach-taught switch when the rider stays close at the side. Use clear partner reactions and avoid forcing either option.

04

Maintain top continuity

Move from riding pressure to a breakdown and back to a ride when the opponent rebuilds. Teach the athlete to remain connected while changing the task.

Put it into practice

Your next session

Run three 30-second rounds with only two permitted reactions. Between rounds, ask which signal triggered the athlete’s choice and whether the position remained stable.

What to look for

Progress when the athlete can recognize the reaction and choose a familiar option under controlled resistance. Adding more branches is useful only after the first two are reliable.
