Set the starting position
Choose an exact position such as a captured single leg or bottom base with a waist connection. Starting consistently helps athletes compare repetitions.
Define the partner role
Tell the partner what resistance or reaction to provide. Begin cooperative, then permit one response such as squaring the hips or keeping the waist hand connected.
Define success and reset
A repetition might end when the attacker recovers the trail foot or the bottom wrestler faces the partner. Reset at that checkpoint rather than letting every attempt become an unrelated scramble.
Add a second decision
Once the first response is reliable, allow a second familiar reaction. The athlete chooses an option rather than reciting a fixed sequence regardless of what the partner does.
Put it into practice
Your next session
Try three rounds: two minutes of cooperative entry, two minutes with one defensive reaction, and two minutes of controlled choice. Switch roles frequently and pause to correct a repeated problem.
What to look for
Ask athletes to name the signal for their choice. If they cannot, reduce the options and make the partner reaction clearer.
